What does a mission trip cost and include?

The cost of the trip depends on your destination and the duration of time staying in the country.

The cost will include domestic and international flights, ground transportation within the destination country, meals and accommodations unless otherwise specified.  The trip cost also includes donations and medical supplies needed for the surgeries that we will preform. You will typically only need additional spending money for meals in the connection airports and any souvenirs that you would like to purchase.

What is a typical day like?

During the day, teams serve at a local hospital or clinic. During the evening, worship and small group time for debriefing are designed to foster spiritual growth.

What is there for me to do if I am not in the medical field?

Actually, there is plenty for you to do.  We actually need auxiliary staff to help triage patients, help with each set up for the surgeries, assist during the some surgeries and countless other items that keep the operation running.  The patients need care and a loving heart before, during and after surgeries.  Each member of the team is vital to making these trips a success.

How do we travel once we arrive to our destination?

HIMM will handle all logistics in regards to local transportation.  You will not be expected to rent or drive any vehicles during your trip.

What do we eat?

We provide all meals once we enter the country, unless otherwise stated. The meals are usually prepared by our hosts and/or local restaurants. Teams occasionally go to local restaurants that serve either authentic cuisine. Meals include breakfast and dinner at the host house or hotel.  Lunch is typically prepared and delivered to our mission site.

Do I need to speak the local language?

Absolutely not! Though it will help you communicate, we actually enjoy it if you cannot.  It’s been said that only 7% of communication is verbal, so you will be able to “say” a lot without even opening your mouth! If you do not speak the local language, you cannot hide behind words like we do so often. Smile and they will smile, love and they will love in return. You’ll be amazed at how God will open your heart and theirs through the lack of communication!

How long is standard mission trip?

Most of our trips will be 7 days unless otherwise stated. Two days will be used for travel.  On the first day after travel we set up equipment, organize and begin to triage/treat patients.  We will typically continue for 3-4 more days.  Your last 1-2 day(s) in the destination country are used for devotion, some rest/relaxation and of course shopping.  The final evening could change your life forever with our final team devotion that evening!

Will my life be changed?

I have not met one who God has called to work alongside HIMM leave without being changed deep within. If you allow it, our Lord will change you beyond what you can even imagine. You do not have to be perfect, or even have a relationship with Christ right now, but if you let Him, He will embrace you and lead you home. He longs for lives changed and waits now for you and those lives He will touch through you.

Do I need a valid passport?

YES! If you don’t already have a current U.S. passport, you may obtain one by picking up the forms at certain branches of the U.S. Post Office or go online to http://travel.state.gov/passport

Passports typically take six weeks to process.

Photocopy all important documents and keep them in a hidden place separate from the originals. Leave another copy at home with someone you can easily get in contact with while you are abroad.

Will there be prayer throughout the trip?

Prayer and reflection are an important part of the mission experience. During your visits, you may participate in prayers with the people.
